A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the News Stand

Before I entered Half-Priced Books***, I told myself I would not pick up anything on a whim, or rather only if it had some extra-ordinary significance.(loosely paraphrasing.)* And what do I find right on top of the bargain rack at the door? The mother of all bargains. It was a pristine copy of a very interesting book for only two dollars. It's title, The Demon Slayers and other stories: Bengali Folk Tales.

It was not till I got home that I found even more about the book. Not only was it a first edition, it was autographed by both authors. Just what is the significance beyond the luck of such a find? Well in a Pop Culture, it is related to the mother of all cultures. Not history or her story but our story.

* in my last visit I found a new edition of Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
(mean while under Division of Labor I find the roots of an evolutionary social process)

Political Calculus and the Political 4 Cast

Rachel Maddow presents an interesting perspective, which I stumbled* on mid-comment. I will call it the His-Story-Ann who stole X-Mass.

Not so simple.

Romney and Santorum on gum-mint funding.

It might not be so simple for us to blame Republicans for taking Federal funds. It can easily be said that they just want their money back. This is aside from their insanity about cutting taxes and spending. But it does seem that they will spend it as long as they don't have to take responsibility for taxing for it.

2012 Grammy Awards

It was with some nostalgia that I had looked forward to seeing the Beach Boys in the up coming Grammy Awards. It was certainly unexpected to have the passing of Witney Houston to add sadness to the nostalgia. It was with appropiate irony and timing that I inaugurated my new DVD recorder by missing the Beach Boys during the previous two sentences. If you will note the anachronism, Glenn Campbell is being honored at the moment, as I have switched rooms and computers. Social Darwinism?

Is that not an inconvenient term? I know it relates to "survival of the fittest", but what is social about it? Shouldn't those that don't fit, be thrown to the wolves? Pardon my spin, but if corporations are people, what are communities? I think we are suffering from labelism and spin.

Second Spin: There seems to be something "inconvenient" about this juxtaposition, which is hard to unspin. I know it stems from "survival of the fittest", but is that not the root of being social? Unsocial Darwinism would be no more convenient. But that doesn't stop some from evolving labels and name calling.

Child's Play

Freak Show vs. Bogeyman:

While my original intent was the feeling that this is getting old, or rather childish. Then to see the nature of the exchange on Morning Joe, it takes some perspectivising.* Martin Bashir covers another aspect of the picture show. Back to the future, I mean Morning Joe, who is in the drivers seat? Mika or Joe? The image of President Obama getting into a car at an auto show. Who is in the drivers seat? Politically the President is. But it is like one of those drivers-ed cars with a second wheel and brakes on the passenger side, and congress is in that seat. But with Batman, I mean Bashir on West, Republicans would have no message if they did not have imagined monsters: "equality of achievement", "economic dependency"and "enslaving".

So...bottom line, Political is a double-edged sword. There is the race and there is the economy. Congress plays a role in both, and negative is not just ugly, it can have actual facts. So Mika can say that Obama is behind the wheel. And Joe can say he is not. Now you may see that the president is not the only one in the car, with a hand on the wheel.

* not that I take the Mediaite perspective (Donny Deutsch made a reasonable point, see negative/ugly/facts.)
